CranioSacral Therapy

What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a very gentle, yet powerful, hands-on treatment that releases tensions and restrictions within the body, helping to reduce and eliminate pain and dysfunction.  A CranioSacral Therapy treatment impacts nearly every bodily system, allowing the whole physical body and all of it's different systems to function at a greater level of health.  It is based on the belief that the body has the ability to self-heal.  CranioSacral Therapy is great for both short-term (acute) and long-term (chronic) pain, injury and dysfunction.  CST is widely used to address physical issues, but it is also used for deep relaxation. Typically, both occur during the treatment.  CST is also often used by many for prevention and health maintenance as well.

Because it is so gentle, CranioSacral Therapy is effective for all ages.  It can be used for a vast array of ailments such as:

  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Neck and Back Pain
  • Stress and Tension related impairments
  • Acute Injuries
  • Joint/muscle aches and pain
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Anxiety
  • Stress Reduction
  • Depression
  • Cancer
  • Immunity
  • TMJ syndrome
  • Many other Conditions

Whether used alone, or paired with traditional healthcare methods, CST has been proved clinically effective in facilitating the body's ability to self-heal.

What is a treatment like?

A CranioSacral Therapy  treatment occurs in a quiet, private room. The client is fully dressed, generally laying on their back on a soft, padded table.  Initial treatments are always 75-90 minutes in duration, as are many of the treatments that follow.  60 minute treatments are also offered.

Using the CranioSacral rhythm, I check for areas of tension and dysfunction throughout the body. I start each treatment by placing both of my hands by your ankles and tuning into your bodies CranioSacral rhythm.  I then check various "listening stations" such as hip bones, diaphragms, and shoulders, also evaluating your CranioSacral rhythm. This gives me an idea of your "whole body" rhythm.  "Listening" to this information from your body, I know which areas to address first. Gentle osteopathic-based techniques are then used to release those areas allowing the entire body to relax and self-correct.  CranioSacral Therapy naturally eliminates pain, reduces stress, improves immunity and enhances your overall health and well-being. Sometimes more than one visit is necessary to address all the areas or issues.  Many people return regularly as the treatments not only address dysfunction and release pain but are incredibly relaxing and rejuvenating as well.

What does it feel like?

Each treatment is different and each person has their own unique experience that may change from treatment to treatment.  The main theme is that treatments reduce or eliminate pain and are deeply relaxing.  Some people fall in and out of sleep throughout the treatment, while others are fully awake the whole time.  Sometimes you may feel like talking throughout the session or you may not speak at all.  The choice is yours and whatever feels right, is right.  There is no right or wrong and I follow your lead.

Releases may be felt by you as heat or warmth where I am working or a gentle pulsing sensation.  Some client's tummies softly "talk" and this is a good sign.  Some clients may feel things in different parts of their body than I am working.  For example, while I am working on your sacrum you may feel softening in your knee.  This is because our whole body is connected and it's pretty amazing to experience this firsthand.  It also explains why, if you come in for shoulder pain, I may work on your lower back-or any other location other than the one where you are experiencing pain and the issue is addressed.

CranioSacral therapy often yields extraordinary results and I feel blessed to be able to be a part of that.  I encourage you to read the testimonials of just a few of my clients.  This short video provides an overview of CST.

Where did CranioSacral Therapy originate?

Dr. John Upledger, an osteopathic physician, discovered the CranioSacral rhythm while assisting with a surgery and wanted to know what this independent rhythm was.

From 1975 to 1983, while working as a Professor at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University, Dr. Upledger led a team of anatomists, physiologist, biophysicists and bio-engineers to research, perform and publish the clinical results of what he went on to call CranioSacral Therapy.

In 1985, Dr. Upledger founded The Upledger Institute to teach CranioSacral Therapy internationally.  Since then, the Upledger Institute has taught over 125,000 students in 50 different countries.

My Education/Training

I obtained my Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license in May of 2011.  I worked for a local Rescue Department for a few years, then resigned when I returned to school full time.

I obtained my Level-1 QiGong Instructor certification in September, 2012.

I took my first CranioSacral class (CranioSacral I) from the Upledger Institute in July of 2013.

I completed CranioSacral Therapy II in January of 2014.  It was at that time when I knew this was what I wanted to do.

I returned to College and obtained my LPN in August of 2016.

I have taken various CS classes including SomatoEmotianal Release 1, SomatoEmotional Release II, Acupressure and Meridians, and The Brain Speaks.

I have worked as a teaching assistant for the Upledger Institute teaching CranioSacral Therapy.

I plan on continuing my education through the Upledger Institute.  So many classes, so much to learn!!   I love CranioSacral Therapy.

In May, 2017 I earned my Usui Reiki I Certification and January 2019 I earned Reiki Level II.  Many hospitals are using Usui Reiki Masters in their Pain and Cancer Units.  I am excited to be a part of that because I know how well CranioSacral Therapy and other modalities work at relieving pain.  I look forward to one day having these modalities covered by insurance policies (gym memberships and stress reduction techniques too!!) and will work toward that happening.

In 2022 I received my certificate for Manual Lymphatic Drainage.  In 2023 I received my certificate for Advanced Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

My hope and deep desire is to help people feel better.  I help those who need help, regardless of their income.  This is evidenced through the volunteer time and treatment donations I provide.  The majority are listed on my "Heart to Give" page.
